Nagel or STOFF, the differences, which to choose?

Nagel candlestick (used)

The Nagel S22 candleholder is the original edition, produced from the late 60’s to the 80’s, in several variants and with various accessories.

STOFF candleholder (new)

The STOFF candlestick is a reissue of the Nagel candlestick, after a production hiatus of over 20 years. It is a faithful reproduction of the original candlestick, except for two details shown below.

Why choose it?

  • If you (or the person you’re giving it to) are sensitive to objects with a history!
It’s a second-hand object that has already lived, that has a past, that has some traces of use.
A true vintage enthusiast or collector will always prefer an original edition to a reissue.

  • If you prefer to buy an object that may increase in value.
A first edition tends to increase in value.
I’ve been selling this candlestick for about ten years now and I’ve noticed an increase in its value of more than 100%.
There’s no way of knowing the future value of an object and I wouldn’t recommend it as a speculative product ;).

  • If you’re environmentally aware. Consuming second-hand goods means giving a second life to an object that has already been produced.

  • If you already have Nagel candleholders. Although Nagel and STOFF candleholders are compatible, not mixing the two creates a more harmonious whole.

Why choose it?

  • If you (or the person you’re giving it to) don’t particularly like flea markets, old objects or second-hand goods!
A STOFF candleholder is brand new and boxed.

  • If you’re in a hurry and want a large quantity of candleholders / certain accessories quickly, or want to be able to complete your set easily later on.
Unlike Nagel candleholders, we are not limited by a second-hand market and we normally have everything you need in stock, or can obtain it very quickly, when you may have to wait several months to find a Nagel S200 stand, for example.

  • If you already have STOFF candleholders. Although Nagel and STOFF candleholders are compatible, not mixing the two creates a more harmonious whole.

How can you tell them apart?

As STOFF candleholders have been produced for over eight years now, it is possible to find second-hand ones (which we don’t currently offer on our site).
A second-hand Nagel candlestick – first edition – has greater collector appeal and therefore a higher price than a STOFF candlestick.

Fortunately, STOFF has done things right, and it’s easy to tell them apart.

The original Nagel candlestick has a thin line of mold marks in the middle of each ball.
The collar is high.

A detail under the foot of the candlestick may give other indications, but does not allow precise dating.
A flat underside (sometimes with a number that corresponds to the mold number) corresponds to an earlier production than a domed foot.
These are not distinct editions, however, simply minor modifications during production.

The STOFF candleholder shows no mold marks.
The collar is very low.
